The Putnam County Conservation District (PCCD) was created by referendum on November 8, 1966, under the provisions of the Conservation District Act of 1963.  The PCCD was established to acquire, preserve, and maintain wildland and other open land, hold them for pleasure and recreation, and use them in such a manner in with such restrictions to leave them unimpaired for the benefit of future generations.

The District actively manages forests and prairies for native flora and fauna, while offering various recreational and educational opportunities.  Programs have incorporated a variety of subject matter ranging from traditional music performances to ecology, astronomy, archaeology, and safety education.
